About The Life Support Project
In late 1999, a number of participants in the Mars Society's arctic-sig mailing list began discussing the possibility of attaching a biological wastewater processing system to the Society's Flashline Arctic Research Station (FMARS). This is a challenging project, if only because the Arctic research season is so short. Any design must be able to start up and shut down rapidly, plus be compact and light (for transport) or able to withstand arctic conditions during the rest of the year.
Such a device would not only provide wastewater management, but is expected to serve as a research platform leading perhaps to flight hardware at an eventual Mars base. At a workshop on January 22, 2000, we outlined a plan to design a system that could be "Arctic Ready" for Summer 2001.
