Subject: Biofilter crash & Sensor chips - but another question

Wow, Hoop, Eric & Terry, that was quite the lecture series! Looks like we're
generating some lively discussion.

But, I also had another couple of questions:

1. Do we have a picture of the hardware we're going to be hooking up to yet?
I recall that was something Kurt was going to get to Mindy.

2. From the design doc v 1.0, I can't tell whether the anaerobic digestor is
inside or outside the hab. Is this known yet?

3. It's a recirculating system. How much water is recirculating at any given
time?

Dean,
Thanks, I think :)

If by "hardware" you mean the habitat, yes we have seen plans of the
facility. We have not had a chance to study them in detail. What we did see
did not have any features (fixtures and water uses) shown. So your implied
question of where and how does this all fit is still an open question. In
fact, it probably is THE question.

Thus, the anaerobic chamber could be anywhere it wont freeze. I assumed it
had to be part of the habitat but that is not required for functionality. In
fact, as Terry pointed out (as did we in our original document) there is a
potential odor problem to the anaerobic chamber. Having it outside the
habitat would be one way of addressing that problem.

The amount of water recirculating at any moment begs a number of interesting
questions. The first and most important is how much water do we need, how
much will the habitat produce in wastewater? Everything else comes from the
answer to this question. The simplest design, that uses the most space,
would have all the water used per unit time recirculating in the system
during that unit time. However, other more space efficient designs are
possible. Another aspect of recirculation has to do with the level of
treatment desired. It is possible to produce potable water. We were not
designing to meet that goal but we could.

Hoop
