Everyone, I haven't heard from anyone other than Dean who is willing or able to meet on Lothlorien. In fact, I haven't heard much from anyone about FMARS at all. Could this be because, according to Zubrin, there is going to be nothing but a portable chemical toilet at FMARS in 2000, and some sort of water recycling system in 2001 (maybe)? He also said that a CELSS is NOT in the plan for early Mars exploration, that chemical-physical systems will be used instead. Of course I argued for CELSS on Mars (and on FMARS) and will continue to do so. Story Musgrave, who was present at the conference in Ohio where I saw Zubrin, also thinks that a CELSS is essential for the missions. If a CELSS is not attached to FMARS there are going to be a lot of disappointed people who thought that Red and Green belonged together. "Where's the greenhouse?", they will ask. The HAB alone will not capture the popular imagination because it is simply too much like normal NASA style imagery. The greenhouse CELSS, on the other hand, shows a connection to living things. Do folks understand what I'm saying? - Terry at biostar_a@yahoo.com

Terry,
I'd be interested in meeting you at Lothlorien. If possible, I'd like to take a tour of your Biostar facility. I have tentative plans for a visit to Chicago the last weekend of July--perhaps I can take a day to drive out to your facility.
As for the e-mail silence--well, I think we're all trying to get a handle on the direction in which we'll proceed. I think you are correct in your assessment over the CELSS ambiguity. Most of us (I believe) would like to work on some sort of system that would evolve and approach a closed ecological system construct (although not necessarily a CELSS in the strict NASA definition). As for me personally, I've discovered that I'm not a very good e-mail conversationalist, possibly due to my impatience with certain technologies.
Should I visit you in July, I hope we can take the opportunity to exchange ideas and design concepts and solidify our organizational and design procedures, in preparation for the August conference.
Regards,
Dave

Terry, I (and I think most of us here on Maryland Task Force) agree with much of what you are saying below. I may not be going to Toronto conference. So coming out to Lothlorien probably wont include me this summer. I do, however, look forward to meeting and talking with you about designing and building living systems.
What is that structure in the lower left corner of the Mars image you pointed us to?

Sounds good David. We'll be throwing a festival (Thunderfunder - to raise funds for a new drum & dance dome) on July 28-30th. Anytime before, during, and/or after is fine. Let me know a few days in advance if possible. Of course you can tour BIOSTAR! There is crash space available as well. Here's my phone number if you need it: (812) 275-0694. - Terry

I'm looking forward to discussing life support with you too John. I've learned a lot about the nuts and bolts of "Living Machines" in the last few years of living in BIOSTAR. My system is very similar to the diagram on the website. Through my mistakes I've learned how to do it much better (and simpler). A full-blown CELSS is not nearly as hard as some folks might think. If Dave can make it before the conference I'll put drawings in his hands. I hope to make it as well. By the way, we are doing some pretty detailed discussion on CELSS in the Green CELSS Task Force. If you are interested, feel free to sign on!
THe thing in the left hand corner of the picture is very strange indeed. I hesitate to guess what it might be. There are currenly quite a few people doing analysis (privately) on this. If I find out anything useful I'll post it. Personally, it looks like giant worm casings. I know that this interpretation is considered (by some unscientific types) to be "crazy". No so. Mars had water for a long time, long enough for life to have risen and even long enough for it to develop to huge sizes. We had dinosaurs! If calculations are correct, Mars destructed (probably a collision with a small asteroid) in Pre-Cambrian (Earth) times. For all we know, much of the life on Earth may have been seeded when Mars was blasted. I don't know what is in the picture but I think it is unscientific to discount the possibility of it being the remains (fossilized) of life. Yes, I know it could be something else. I also think that it is unscientific to say that it IS anything at all - until we get more data. - Terry at biostar_a@yahoo.com
